How To Enjoy Ice Cream If You’re Lactose Intolerant

If you’re lactose intolerant, you probably avoid ice cream due to the upsetting effects it can cause you. Gas, cramps, nausea and diarrhea are all common in those that are lactose intolerant. However, just because certain foods, combinations and eating habits lead to these unpleasant effects, doesn’t mean you can never enjoy dairy again. Registered Dietitian Dayna Weiten says, “There are a number of strategies that people can use to include products in their diet that may have lactose.” There are a lot of benefits to dairy, and milk specifically, including the fact that it contains important vitamins and minerals and contributes to ward off disease. With that said, its worth reading the article to see if some of these tips and tricks could help you allow milk on your menu. Plus ice cream is just so dang tasty!

Try Smaller Portions:

“I always encourage people to start with low amounts and check out their tolerance,” says Weiten. “If they’re symptom-free, then they can try to increase the amount gradually.” Try half a milkshake next time, or a small allotment of cheese. These smaller portions are way less inclined to give you any negative effects or pain.

Space Out Your Dairy Intake:

While some dairy dishes may entail you taking in your entire day’s dairy at once, this isn’t the best option for those with lactose intolerance. Instead, try drinking one cup of milk (or consuming another dairy dish) in the morning and another one at night. Chances are, the discomfort will be way less.

Eat Dairy With Meals

When you consume dairy with other food, it gets digested more slowly. Meaning, when the lactose goes to your large intestine, it has already been digested quite a bit. Weiten agrees- “Having a milkshake or ice cream by itself is more likely to create symptoms,” she says.

Try Enzyme Tablets:

Lactose intolerance is a result of your body not being able to create enough lactase to subsidize the dairy you are ingesting. However, you can choose to take lactase tablets to top up the enzymes in your digestive system.

Try Lactose-Free Options

Lactose-free milk is one great option for those who are lactose intolerant. Lactose-free milk is achieved during the production process by simply removing the lactose. There are also ice cream flavors that are dairy free or vegan, so don’t feel you have to miss out on ice cream either.

FYI Delray leads the pack in terms of ice cream shops that offer dairy-free ice cream and vegan ice cream for lactose intolerant people or people with other dietary restrictions. Vegan ice cream is  ice cream which is made from healthy elements and which uses only natural ingredients. It also doesn’t include dairy products. Vegan ice cream and desserts are dairy free meaning that they don’t contain any dairy products such as milk or cream. Finally, lactose intolerant people can enjoy delicious ice cream!
