Healthy Frozen Yogurt Toppings

I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t enjoy a little ice cream or frozen yogurt every now and then. There isn’t a better treat out there to help you cool down on a hot summer day. Here at FYI Delray we have a wide variety of delicious frozen desserts to help satisfy any sweet tooth and a list of toppings and flavors that will appease the entire family. If you’re trying to stay in shape, we have a wide variety of low calorie  frozen yogurts and sorbets that offer a guilt-free way to satisfy your sweet tooth. As innocuous as it may seem, it’s still important to take care when choosing your toppings, or run the risk of transforming your healthy 120-calorie treat into a calorie-packed mess of cream and simple carbohydrates. Classic toppings like caramel and chocolate may be off the table for you, but there are plenty of other options out there that will give your sundae a little boost in flavor while minimizing the impact to your waistline.

Strawberries

With summer approaching fast, both ice cream/frozen yogurt and strawberries are coming into season. Strawberries make for an excellent choice when it comes to ice cream toppings, offering a little hit of natural sugars to give your froyo a little kick. Combined with ice cream, they form a classic flavor combination. Strawberries also have a hidden benefit for the stressed and anxiety ridden, they lower cortisol levels in the body, naturally relieving stress and keeping the body healthy.

Sprinkles

This one came as a bit of a surprise to me. Sprinkles are remarkably low calorie, and even an excessive dousing on your frozen yogurt won’t derail your weight loss progress. Whether you choose rainbow or chocolate sprinkles, you’re in the clear. It’s better to go with fruit if you want to try and boost your supply of vitamins and minerals, but if you love sprinkles feel free to give yourself a nice, generous coating free of guilt.

Maraschino Cherries

What sundae is complete without the quintessential “cherry on top”? Lucky for you, adding one, or even two, three, or four, cherries to your bowl of frozen yogurt won’t destroy your waistline or your weight loss progress. Just keep in mind most brands of maraschino cherries use red artificial coloring and high fructose corn syrup in their products. If you’re trying to avoid those kind of additives, see if you can find a jar of the homemade variety.

Whipped Cream

Another classic topping, whipped cream can be used in moderation without the shame of making a return trip to the store to buy new pants. The only stipulation is that we recommend keeping it to three tablespoons or less to keep calories from fat and sugar in check.

Banana

Easily my favorite fruit to put on top of ice cream, bananas are a staple in the ice cream parlor. One of the only fruits to have a sundae named after it, bananas make an excellent choice when searching for a low calorie frozen yogurt topping. You can make a low calorie, slimmed down banana split at home by combining a quarter cup of chocolate and vanilla ice cream with some whipped cream and strawberry and banana slices (all options mentioned above).

Diet and exercise are important if you want to lose weight and improve your overall health, but it is still important to let yourself have a treat once in a while. You can still enjoy yourself as long as you make informed choices when you go up to make your selection.
